Feminist theory

Divergent

Divergent is a feminist film and the film is about a young girl called Tris who has to choose what faction she goes to but she is a Divergent. Tris and her family are part of the Abnegation and it comes to the point where they get tested for what faction they should choose and Tris comes up as all off them meaning that she is Divergent. Divergents are hunted and killed as they are not seen as normal or safe. She is told to leave quickly by the person who tested her and to say that she was sick and this shows that it is a big deal. At the choosing the next day she chooses to leave her faction and move to Dauntless where she train so become a defender of the city. She firstly has problems fitting in as she is small and week but she never gives up and tries her hardest and proves herself to everyone and makes the cut to officially become a member of Dauntless. She gets found out that she is a Divergent and she and Four who is the man she falls in love with who is also Divergent fight back against the government. The film is is a feminist film because the protagonist and antagonist are both female. The protagonist is the main character and this means that the film is revolving around a female, and the antagonist is also a female and she is an important part of the film so two most important characters who show good and evil are both female. Also, feminism is shown when Tris chooses to join Dauntless as stereotypically men would join this faction because they are trained fighters and they are strong and fearless. The director of this film is Neil Burger who has released other mystery films such as ‘Limitless’.

Casting

Neil Burger brought actors/actresses along to the film such as Shailene Woodley (Tris Prior), Theo James (Tobias Eaton / Four), Miles Teller (Peter) and Kate Winslet (Jeanine Matthews). These are big names in the film industry and they were chosen because they fit the style of the characters and this is because they are usually found in serious, action and romantic films and some of them are seen and good and other are seen as bad and this is why they fit their characters. Shailene Woodley fits well into the character of Tris because she is seen in lots of love/feminist films so this film fits her really well because it is a feminist film but she falls in love.

Techniques

Examples of techniques used are the effects such as when Tris is taking the test, she sees lots of copies of herself around, it’s almost like a mirror. And then when she tackles the dog she grabs it and falls through the floor into another situation. This is an example of a special effect technique. Camera angles are used in many different ways such as extreme close up to she the emotion in her face, tracking and zooming in to show importance/dramatic effect to what is happening or what is about to happen.

Genre

The genres set in this film are action, adventure, mystery and si-fi. We know that these are the genres set in the film because there is a lot of fighting throughout the film and we also see adventure because Tris is on a journey to succeed and to make it as part of Dauntless but when she sees that they are all being controlled and used as soldiers to kill innocent people, she going on a mission to prevent it and to do what it right. Mystery is seen because Tris is a Divergent and Divergents are seen as dangerous and they need to be killed. We don’t know what is going to happen to Tris and she goes through many difficult situations where she could be killed or put at risk of losing her place in Dauntless. Also the relationship between her and Four, we don’t know what is going to happen between them until later in the film but we can sense something so it creates that sense of a mystery. Lastly we have si-fi. We know there is si-fi in this film because it is very futuristic and there is a lot of advanced technology that we don’t even see today. For example, the computers that they use, the weapons and the use of factions.

Auteur theory

The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street is a film about a man called Jordan Belfort and his multi million dollar broker business. The film covers auteur theory and we know this because Leonardo DiCaprio who plays the role of Jordan Belfort talks to the audience almost like a narrator but he is not hidden away, he talks to the audience as he goes throughout the film and the film happens to be a true story about the life of the real Jordan Belfort. Jordan starts off the film by showing up to Wall St for his first day at his new brokership. He gets sat down by a loud angry man and is told to get on the phone ASAP but then the main guy from the company comes over and talks to Jordan and praises him on presenting a stock in this interview and invites him for lunch. At this lunch he tells Jordan everything that he needs to know about the job and he then goes on to become a fully licensed broker. It was all going good until the market dropped and they went out of business. Jordan then discovery penny stocks (pink sheets) from a new small brockership and he blows them away and decides to set up his own business. This was the start of Stratton Oakmont and the money and drug crazed life of Jordan Belfort.
He abuses his money on drugs and woman and starts to run the business illegally and he gets in a lot of trouble for it from the FBI and in the end he has to officially give names and details about people who were involved and he gets his prison sentence decreased but still has to spend 3 years behind bars. Throughout the film we see Jordan using many different drugs but he his favorite is Cocaine and Ludes which he abuses the use of and becomes almost addicted to them. Ludes are what really brought his business down as he took some really strong ones and Donnie leeks lots of important/confidential information over the phone while the line was tapped by the FBI.

Casting

Martin Scorsese used Hollywood A List actors for this film such as Leonardo DiCaprio (Jordan Belfort), Margot Robbie (Naomi Lapaglia) and Jonah Hill (Donnie Azoff) and together these names would already be a huge anchor to the film as their fans would be attracted to the film as some of their favorite actors/actresses are part of it. These A listers have been chosen for the roles that they play because their character fits the role. We know this because for example Leonardo DiCaprio fits the role of Jordan because he is usually seen in serious and direct movies where he would be seen as a ladies man and would sometimes talk directly to the audience. Margot Robbie fits the role of Naomi because she is seen as an attractive/seductive woman who can get any man she wants. She is also seen to be the main female role in the films that she appears in. Jonah Hill fits the role of Dinnie because he is a funny actor who is usually seen in comedy/actions films for his character that makes people laugh. He is always seen to be the one to mess up or do something wrong in a film and that is shown well in this film. Also, he is seen to be a bit weird and to be slightly wrong in the head in some of the films that he plays but always comes through right by the end which again is shown in this film.

Techniques

The techniques used in this film are things like camera shots and angles, special effects and music. The use of camera shots and angles are seen when he talks directly to the audience and when he does this the shot is usually tracking when he is walking but it would really be mid - long shots used. We also see a lot of close up - extreme close up shots when he is taking drugs and this increases the intensity of the scene and makes it more dramatic. The special effects that we see are also when he takes drugs, we see that the steady cam is used in close up but the background is very messy and almost not human. Also when he is crawling on the floor at the country club we see him looking down the stairs which is POV but the stairs suddenly seem to extend and they look bigger than they actually are which again reminds us that he is on drugs and they mess with your head so this is a good example of special effects. The music is used to enhance the mood of the scene, so in the more intimate and romantic scenes, more classical and calm music is used and when things are kicking off or the drugs are in place, the music will be faster and and more violent maybe.

Genre

There are only really 2 main genres of this film and they are romance and biography. We know that these are the the genres because there is a lot of romance involved and this is because Jordan is married at the beginning and then he finds Naomi and falls in love with her and he then ends up getting a divorce and marrying Naomi and we see a lot of intimate moments between them throughout the film. Then we have the genre of biography and this is because the film is about the life of Jordan Belfort and it is mostly real and he had this film made to show how he turned his life around from being a multi millionaire who had all the drugs and money he wanted to then being thrown behind bars for 3 years and deciding to become an inspirational talker and became completely sober. The film was made to make people aware so that they don’t follow the mistakes that he made.

Media Assignment - Purpose

Media Assignment - Purpose
By George Gillard

1.

People tend to watch/consume music videos via YouTube nowadays because its audience is so large from all of the different types of videos that it has to offer and this is very convenient for its target audience so it us used a lot and by many people, 1.5 billion people a month. This platform is the biggest for what it has to offer. It is made to make life for its audience easy when they are using it and they can find virtually any video they want from it. Before YouTube became what it is today, platforms such as MTV and music channels on TV would have been the most popular way to watch music videos. They were popular because you would have someone talking between tracks about music and the tracks that where coming up and there would be chart shows on to show the most popular videos and songs around.

2.

Music videos have increased the income for record labels because they attract an audience of those who see the video. The audience will know what label the video is from because there is sometimes a small logo/name of the label in the corner of the video and in the description of the video on platforms such as YouTube. An example of an artist who owns their own label is Martin Garrix and his label is called STMPD records. The record label has consists of artist that have worked with Martin and they are Justin Milo, Brooks, Mesto and many more. The benefits of this is that he has more freedom with who he signs and what he releases. If his label is successful then he could potentially make a lot of money from it too which is a very big benefit.

3.

a) Music videos are used to promote a particular song and they do this by using different styles of video that could work well with the genre of the actual music. Examples of the styles are animation, live performance/in concert, surrealist and narrative. Some popular music videos are promoted on platforms such as YouTube and MTV and will come up on your screen and the and the audience will click on it to see what it is and the track will play along with the video so this is an example of music videos promoting a particular song. Martin Garrix’s latest release ‘Dreamer’ with busker Mike Young is an example of a narrative music video.

b) Marshmello's music videos all promote his albums and we know this because he is featured in all of his music videos and we see his distinctive mask and the face on the mask is all over his album work on all of the music that he releases. So his masks features in his music videos promoting him as an artist because just by looking at the mask, you instantly know who it is. Other examples of artists who use the same technique are Deadmouse, Dangermouse, Daft Punk and SBTRKT. All of these artists have hidden identities while on stage but some of them use the mask to hide their identities even when they are off stage so they feel that they can live a bit more of a normal life without being recognised with their mask off. Marshmello is never seen without his mask on and only family, friends and people who work close with him know who he is and this really adds a sense of mystery to the artist and this can entice their audience.

c) Marshmello started his career making music for the pre teen/teen audience as his music was quite relevant to games and young gamers as it had a fun animated feel to the music. An example of this would be his track ‘Alone’ which he released in 2016.  He then changes things up to produce more commercial tracks that would work well for radio around the world. His first big radio hit was 'Silence' that he released with new talent Khaled who has gone on to achieve great things because of this track. This track went to number 1 all around the world and could still be one of his most successful tracks to date. He then went on to release massive radio hits with artists such as Selena Gomez, Anne Marie and his latest partnership Bastille. As well as releasing radio tracks, Marshmello has been producing massive club tracks which reaches out to another genre of audience which shows he is artistic with his music and he has recently been named the 10th biggest DJ in the world which is a massive achievement for an artist who was properly recognised from his first radio hit 'Silence' which was release in August 2017.

d) An example of synergy with another media text is the music at the beginning of James Bond films. There is always an opening sequence to the James Bond films and the film provides the music video for the song. For example, Adele's Skyfall was the official song for the Bond film Skyfall and within that video you see all of the credits for the film and all the important names. Also in the background there is usually something going on with what happened in the clip of the film before, but it is all animated and animated guns and mysterious women are added to create the sense that he is a dangerous man yet he gets all the women telling us that he is also a ladies man.

3 Radio Adverts - Media Assignment
David - George Gillard

Tesco

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLvBRCyNHJs&index=1&list=PL9ZAH7g2F0UVQmdLMf4syFk2nsWraJUiD

Factual information

This radio advert tells us all of the items that are included in the new Tesco price drop and says that this offer is only in selected UK stores and the availability that they have.

Message

t   The message that this advert connotes is that Tesco has a big price drop that is currently active and this price drop covers most of their essential/popular items and we also hear that this offer is only active in selected stores around the UK.

Style

The style of the advert is very informal and we know this because both speakers are only stating simple facts and being a viewer of this product, I don't feel as if they are connecting with me as I don't get the sense that they are talking to me. I also get a friendly and calm feel to this advert because both voices seem calm and friendly which makes the product seem welcoming to its customers and makes it family friendly.

Structure

The structure of the advert is short and sweet with the use of two friendly and welcoming voices and these two voices are telling their audience that there is currently a big price drop at Tesco so this is them connecting with the audience, telling them some good news and something that they would be glad to hear.

Purpose

The purpose of this advert is to get the message of there being a big price drop over to their audience and this is helpful information for them so that they know what is going on and this will also draw in new customers because they will see that there is a price drop and they will think that they should go and shop there because there are better prices than other places where they might shop.

Persuasive techniques

We can see the use of persuasive techniques in this advert by the fact that firstly there is a price drop on their food and people love to hear that there is a discount on food and this will draw in a lot of people because they will want to make use of this offer while they can. Also the use of friendly voices will reassure the audience that they are welcoming and there is nothing bad about what they are trying to sell through the advert.

Samsung

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1Kb4w8wSnE&index=2&list=PL9ZAH7g2F0UVQmdLMf4syFk2nsWraJUiD

Factual information

The woman tells us that the phone is award winning and this is a big thing that the audience will pick up on and this will make them interested in the phone and what it has to offer so its target audience will be greater because of this. Also she mentions that the phone includes over 50 pounds worth of games and films for free. We also pick up on what the exact model of phone the woman is advertising.

Message

The message that the speaker is trying to get across is that the product is very reliable and it has many top quality features. The product is shown as a luxury and something that you must have as she is saying that we need to see what she can see and to do that you MUST have a Samsung Galaxy S.

Style

The style of this advert is very formal because it feels as if she is talking to you and she is conveying important information to the audience and this will draw them into the product. So the advert is factual and almost making us jealous and wanting to see what she can see so that makes the audience interested in the product. So the style of the advert is to make the audience intrigued and it is persuasive.

Structure

The structure of this advert is formal and friendly as the speaker is talking to you and she seems very friendly which enhances the products audience and reassures us that it is of good quality and it is a family friendly product. The facts shown are all positive and are things that people want to hear and this will interest the audience and will make them want to know more.

Purpose

The purpose of this radio advert is to promote a Samsung Galaxy S and to show off all of the product and tell the audience what they should expect from the product and what is included.

Persuasive techniques

We see that persuasive techniques have been used because the woman says "If you could see what I could see" and this makes us the audience want to know what it is she can see and she goes on about how good the product is and this makes us want to know and see more about the product so it will make its viewers go to a shop and see what it is about.

Nandos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odyuao_-UJg&list=PL9ZAH7g2F0UVQmdLMf4syFk2nsWraJUiD&index=7

Factual information

The facts that we get from this radio advert are that the restaurant serves fresh chicken and they play free music. Also the man talking has an accent and this is a Portuguese and this tells us the cuisine of the restaurant.

Message

The message that this advert conveys is that Nandos is a very nice restaurant which serves chicken and plays music. Also it is not Portuguese music like the speaker used to listen to, it is more up to date music that is heard on the radio.

    Style

The style of the advert formal because the speaker is talking to you and he is being very polite and friendly and agin he makes a very welcoming sense to the restaurant and you get the feeling that the food is good and it is somewhere fun to go, so the advert is very inviting.

    Structure

The structure is formal and friendly but does not give much information, just a little on what food they serve and that they play music. The advert is just something short and sweet that makes the restaurant sound fun enjoyable.

    Purpose

The purpose of this advert is to create a welcoming and happy feeling to the restaurant 'Nando's' and I think that they have done this very well and they are trying to promote music at the same time, so the advert has multiple meanings. The Portuguese man creates a family friendly atmosphere as he is very kind and polite and this is important for this type of advert.

    Persuasive techniques

The Portuguese man is very persuasive in what he says because he is polite and friendly and manages to covey simple messages throughout the advert and even adds a little bit of humour to sell the product even more.

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory - George Gillard

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory - George Gillard

Tim Burton is categorised as a auteur film maker because his films are not just a story and characters because he makes his work relatable and identifiable to his audience and he makes it true to himself. Also we see that he makes his films very different to anyone else and they are very unique so when someone sees his work, they can tell who made it.

I think that in the Tim Burton film 'Charlie and The Chocolate Factory' there is a message told and that message is to not take things in life for granted and to be loyal to your family and something that good will happen. For example, Charlie is brought up poor and living in a beaten up house with all of his family and he sees that there are 5 golden tickets to go to the chocolate factory and he gets lucky and finds the last ticket. All the other people who got one where spoilt and they went through lots of different stages in the factory and Charlie was the only one who passed the tests and was given the chance to run the chocolate factory along side Willy Wonker himself but he wasn't aloud to bring his family so he declined which shows that his family is the most important thing to him. Willy Woker then understood how family is impotent to his so he agrees to let them all live inside the factory.

The trailers for the films 'Beetlejuice' and 'Edward Scissorhands' both show similarities in their genres and themes. In Edward Scissorhands, the main actor is an outcast because he has scissors for hands and he is seen as a monster to everyone but one day he is told to come home with a woman and he finds a woman and falls in love with her but he has lots of different obstacles in his way because of his hands problems that he causes through them but he does not give up on what he wants. In Beetlejuice, there is a couple and they move to a haunted house and they have to do everything they can to have the house to themselves and they don't give up to get what they want. The theme of not giving up is shown in both film trailers and is also seen in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory because Charlie does not give up on finding a ticket and he ends up being the only person left and wins the end prize. Because of these examples, we can see that a recurring genre that Tim Burton uses is 'quest' and this is the genre that he will base his work on.

Radio task 1 - George Gillard

Radio Task 1 - George Gillard

Mercedes Benz van advert

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jhqa8izMRG8&list=PL_-0bPeCKBTHxM3jSxgmbVQaEBEp-julj&index=1

This advert is quite formal but complexed at the same time because it includes important facts and tells you about APR and it tells us that there is a certain date as to when the vehicles must be registered. Also, it explains that there is a website that you should visit for details or problems. The man talking says "we" which is formal and creates the sense of a family of community of those who drive the vans and this creates a very welcoming sense.

The audience that this product is aimed at is predominantly men who work in the building or electrical business as they would need a good reliable van that can get them from A to B with no problems and it needs to be able to carry all their tools. The age of the audience would be from about 20 to 45 years old.

The advert really lures in its target audience because the man speaking has a calm voice and he knows what he is talking about. He measures us that the product is good and that the people who use it are part of a community and they should feel happy to drive the vans.

British Gas advert

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKJBz5KxN-U&index=10&list=PL_-0bPeCKBTHxM3jSxgmbVQaEBEp-julj

The British Gas radio advert is formal but simple as the man speaking does not go into lots of important detail but talks about reassuring you about things like making sure that your boiler is working well for a fixed fee and it is a special offer. It is formal because he is talking to his audience and we know this because he says "you" and "your" and this tells us that he is making an effort to interact with his audience.

His voice is deep and with the music in the background, it makes us feel that he is an important person and that we should listen to what he has to say. Also, the music sounds quite victorious and sounds like something that you would hear after winning something so this again makes that audience trust the product because the music makes it sound reliable.

The target audience for this product would be both males and females who have their own houses as they will need gas to make things in their house work so this product is aimed at them and it is for people aged 18 and over because from that age onwards you will be needing gas to power things.

Club Nova adverts

Club NOVA London George Gillard The client and name for my product of Club NOVA in London. The weekly residents are: Monday: Jona...
